1. John Calvin Nursery/Primary schools aim at giving quality and sound education to the children of both the rural and urban dwellers,
2. The school also aims at giving the children moral values through imparting Christian education that could enhance their spiritual lives,
3. The schools will use all the strategies within their reach to incorporate Christian education predominantly based on Nigeria Reformed Church Doctrine,
4. The schools aim at creating the enabling environments for the children to be self-reliant through qualitative application of the lessons learned.
5. The schools are created to reduce the high cost of education to the affordable rate for the children of the poor and the needy especially those children whose parents are Nigeria Reformed Church members.
6. They also aim at preparing the youngsters for job opportunities in the nearest future after passing through the school system of these types
7. The schools aim at using the education as an effective tool for evangelizing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the unreached using the children. The teachers as the facilitators in imparting the objectives of the schools will also serve well in spreading the gospel of truth hence the doctrine of the church. This is one of the reasons why most of the teachers are members of Nigeria Reformed Church.
8. The aim of the schools will as well involve the accommodation of the vulnerable and the orphans who are less privileged in the society by reducing their cost of education in the schools in a special ways to give them some sense of belonging.
9. To train pupils academically to be able to pass first school leaving certificate (FLSC)
10. To prepare pupils academically for secondary education.
11 To train pupils spiritually, morally and socially to be good Christian and good members of the society
To mobilize and manage resources and generate income for the sustenance of the school. The board in turn appointed management committee to run daily affair of the school. The head of the management is the principal of John Calvin Secondary School assisted by the head master JCNPS and the rest are teaching and non- teaching staff.
Description of Activities:
For the purpose of proper description of the activities that JCNPS undertakes the following headings:
a. Admission of pupils to JCNPS.
Admission of pupils into JCNPS is a yearly exercise. Pupils are admitted into the school regardless of religion, tribe or social status. Forms are sold to interested candidates at the end of an academic session, usually between the months of July and August. Admission is based on merit ( there are always an entrance exam that pupils had to pass for proper placement in a particular class) However, parents who are not Christians will have to sign an undertaking form that apart from the approved subjects from the Government, they will permit JCNPS staff to teach their children Christian Religious Knowledge.
b. Staff Employment.
Since this is a Christian school, teachers who apply for employment must be a practicing Christian. Such staff always had to undergo through written and oral interviews after which he/she will be placed on probation for at least three months. Within this period we access the person’s academic, spiritual and moral gifts.
c. Teaching and learning.
Like most other Nigerian schools, a teacher in JCNPS is assigned a particular class to teach, guide and supervise the pupils. Classes start at 8: 00am through 12:30pm for Nursery section, (Nursery 1-3) 8:00am through 1:00pm for Junior primary section (Primary 1-3) and 8:00am through 1:45pm for senior primary (Primary 4-6).
d. Administration of NRC JCN/PS
The style of administration in NRC JCN/PS changed following the change of principal ship position in JCSS Oswanka. Rev. N.I Ude assumed the office of the principal of JCSS in September 2015
In order to ensure uniformity in the standard of NRC JCN/PS wherever it is established. The management saw the need for someone who will be supervising the activities of NRC JCN/PS on daily be and give report to the management from time to time. In view of this the management appointed supervising Headmaster in the person of Elder Ogbonna Stephen.
e. Supervision and monitoring.
Jcss supervised and monitors the teaching and learning processes in all the branches of the through the supervisory Head master who pays unscheduled visit to the schools to see how they do their work. During those visits he always advice the Head teacher and the entire staff of the school he visited on the proper way of doing things in the school. The management also monitors and ensure proper financial management in all the branches as all the money are returned to the office of the supervision who banks it for them.
f. Infrastructural Development in NRC JCNPS
The management of Jcss has put a proposal to a donor organization (Cypressa) who accepted to build classroom blocks in branches of NRC JCNPS on yearly basis. At the moment 6 (six) classroom blocks has been built at John Calvin Nursery Primary school Igweledoha Iseke ,4 (four ) classroom blocks at John Calvin Nursery Primary School Nduawala Agbaja ,4 (four) classroom blocks at John Calvin Nursery Primary School Ndibokote Ezza- Inyimegu. In all these schools desk are provided for the pupils based on the school population at the time of the building of the classrooms. The host local churches contribute 10% of the total cost of the building. Do the church contribution is mostly in labour and provision of some materials.
g. Uniform Examination
The examination of JCNPS is organized in such a way that every school is given one question paper that is set at JCNPS office located in JCCS Oswanka. This is done to ensure that the same quality of education is been given to the children despite the location of the school. It also serves as a control measure to the teachers because they are expected to teach so that their pupils will be able to pass the uniform examination which is always from the general curriculum approved by the government.
h. Organization of Workshops for JCNPS Teachers.
Workshops are always organized for staff of JCNPS on the use of mother tongue in teaching primary school pupils. They were also given guidelines on how to organize morning prayers using Izzi Bible. This is to ensure that Christian education from Reformed Education background is given to the children at their early stage of life. A part from this workshops are also organized on school administration, Classroom management, Lesson plan and lesson note and other educational related topics.
i. Creation of General Office for JCNPS .
The NRC JCNPS primary school has been given an office accommodation in JCSS Oswanka .The office coordinates the activities of NRC JCNPS and report to the principal and the management for their advice. At present the office is run by the supervisory headmaster and his secretary. The salary of the supervisory headmaster is paid by JCSS Oswanka because NRC JCNPS do not have enough income to pay his salary for now while his secretary is been from 5% that is contributed from branches of NRC JCNPS as running cost of the general office
j. Involvement of local churches in administration
The local churches are encouraged to assist in running the branch of the school by give relevant information of the school to the office of the supervisor. The PTA of the school are headed by NRC members who in the church and the JCSS management in most churches.
